The Departure

Another morning crept out of the dark night upon Alfonso, awakening among his senses the usual nausea, causing the young and other wise well raised young man to loudly curse the alarm clock and the unknown mystical forces that decided that men should wake up once the sun takes hold of the land.

Lingering no more, after he realized he really has to, Alfonso gets out of the bed and still half asleep and cursing, leaves behind the warm comfort of his night lair. It’s time for a new adventure! The morning wake-up ritual starts slowly as usual. A quick bathroom lap, teeth brush, face wash and eyes open. Stage two – the cold kitchen and colder Coca-Cola. Here comes the coffee! Finally the hot steamy black potion is ready. Stage three – hot coffee, cold Coke, three cigarettes and… toilet meditation, the only peaceful moments of the day. Only in that toilet quietness he could sink in deep thoughts about all the big problems of human kind and search for the meaning of life. Read the rest of this entry »

“It’s only after we’ve lost everything that we’re free to do anything…” This piece of urban wisdom, from Fight Club, haunted me since the first time I heard it. I never quite completely understood it until I was going too loose a big part of my “everything”.

January 11, 2010, was the first day of work for this New Year, after the winter holiday. In this first day of work I got fired. I was invited to a “start of the year meeting”, with all the executives. Every department discussed their plan for the next year and after two hours it was my turn to present my action plan. It became obvious right away that this “something” that was not working anymore was in fact everything. We just had presidential elections in Romania. To make a long story short it was a confrontation between two parties – orange and red. My city is a red city. My former company was medium size going for national size because it was red also and benefited from big lucrative contracts for public works, many of them secured by bending the law with the complicity of those red politicians elected with their help. -          You don’t shine anymore. And it’s been some time now. Instead you grow smaller and grey. Are you going to do something about it?

-          I have a plan.

-          Uuuu! And what’s the plan?

-          I don’t have yet all the details but…

A squeak is heard outside the door. The two men sitting at the kitchen table turn their heads in the same time towards the door. In the small and poorly lighted room a graveyard silence crawls dawn the walls. Only the water drops released in a perfect rhythm by the broken tap are marking to loud the passing seconds. The two men wait in tension staring at the door once upon a time painted in a bright red.

-          You think…

-          Sssssst!

Clank! Clank! Twice. The door slides open grinding to a halt when it slams against the wall. Without thinking the two men jumped off their chairs in opposite directions. Read the rest of this entry »
